 Tourism Glossary

Hello, my name is Maxence and I am a tourism student. today I will present you a quick glossary about some complicated terms of the industry. By knowing these terms you will be able to understand my blogs easier and you will also understand some terms that you hear basically everyday when travelling or working in the tourism industry.

cegep :      Noun

                  College of professional and general education 

                  Exemple: She'll be going to cegep next month

tourism:     noun

                    the commercial organization and operation of vacations and visits to                         places of interest.

                    example : The islands' economy is largely dependent upon tourism

                       Fr: tourisme.

travel agency: noun

                          An agency that makes the necessary arrangements for travelers, especially                              the booking of airline tickets and hotel rooms.


                              Example : He had a number of different business interests, including a travel                            agency.   

                              Fr: Agence de voyage

tour guide :       noun

                            a person employed to show tourists around places of interest.

                            Example : our tour guide was very knowledgeable and entertaining  

                            Fr : Guide touristique

tour operator :   noun

                            a person or company which creates and/or markets inclusive tours and                                     subcontracts with suppliers to create a package. Most tour operators sell                                 through travel agents and/or directly to clients.

                               Example: Tour operators are redefining their programs to cater to this                                        growing market

backpack :         verb

                            travel or hike carrying one's belongings in a backpack.

                            Example : he has backpacked around the world

ecotourism :       noun

                             tourism directed toward exotic, often threatened, natural environments,                                     intended to support conservation efforts and observe wildlife.
  
                             Example : Costa Rica has pioneered what's now become known as                                          ecotourism, traveling in harmony with nature.

cultural tourism: noun

                              A type of tourism activity in which the visitor’s essential motivation is to                                      learn, discover, experience and consume the tangible and intangible                                          cultural attractions/products in a tourism destination

                               Example : Cultural tourism does a big difference in the economy of                                            developing countries

adventure tourism : noun

                                   a type of tourism involving travel to remote or exotic locations in order to                                    take part in physically challenging outdoor activities.

                                    Example : Queenstown is a popular adventure tourism resort known for                                      its kayaking, bungee jumping, white-water rafting and skiing.

food tourism:            noun

                                    The act of pursuing unique and memorable eating and drinking                                                 experiences.

                                    Example : Italy is a paradise for food tourism

    mass tourism :        noun

                                      Mass tourism refers to the movement of a large number of organized                                       tourists to popular holiday destinations for recreational purposes

                                      Example : The environmental price that we pay for mass tourism has                                                        not been fully calculated

 domestic tourism :  noun

                                    Domestic tourism is tourism involving residents of one country traveling                                     only within that country. 

                                     Example: June was a good month for local tourism amid COVID-19

tourist attractions :   noun

                                     tourist attraction is a place of interest where tourists visit, typically                                      for its inherent or an exhibited natural or cultural value, historical                                                 significance, natural or built beauty, offering leisure and amusement.

                                     Example: The Eiffel Tower is one of the most visited tourist attractions                                      in the world

tourist trap :               noun

                                     a crowded place that provides entertainment and things to buy for                                             tourists, often at high prices

                                     The street market is a tourist trap that mostly sells cheap souvenirs

business travel :         noun

                                      Travel for a purpose and to a destination determined by a business,                                          and where all costs are met by that business
                                    
                                      The United States still bans tourism and most business travel to Cuba

national park :             noun

                                      a scenic or historically important area of countryside protected by the                                       federal government for the enjoyment of the general public or the                                              preservation of wildlife

                                      Commercial exploitation of natural resources in a national park is                                               illegal.

tourist information centre :   noun

                                                  an office that supplies information to people who are visiting                                                   an area for pleasure or interest, for example advice on things                                                      to see, accommodation, etc.
              
                                                  Next to the board is a yellow tourist information centre, all                                                           glass and concrete

visa :               noun

                         stamp of approval recorded in a passport to enter a country for a specific                                  purpose
 
                         Example : Many more had been refused visas to travel to the conference.

world heritage site : noun

                                    a site designated by UNESCO as being of special historical, cultural or                                     natural importance
    
                                    Example : The Old Quebec is a world heritage site

                          Example : UNESCO's head must call for a halt to the armed conflict.
